The Invention Of Corded Telephones Changed How We Live
The invention of corded telephones changed the world. Which when you think about it is remarkable for an instrument that is relatively simple. With this device we are able to reach someone that lives in another country, town, or state by dialing a simple string of numbers. In fact the name telephone derives from two Greek words that have the meaning far and voice.
The basic principles involved in the operation of the telephone are that it converts sound waves, or the human voice, into optical, or electrical, signals and then reverses the process at the receiving end. These translated signals can then be transmitted across worldwide phone networks. Therefore enabling communications to take place in minutes, or hours, rather than the days, or weeks, prior to the advent of the phone.
The traditional phone system is comprised of a insulated and twisted pair of wires, a telephone line, a device (a light, beeper, or bell) that alerts a householder of an incoming call, and a dialing (keypad or a rotary dial) mechanism for the outgoing calls. The pair of insulated wires are usually capable of handling most input to the system including audio information and other signals.
The device that is known as a telephone not only incorporates an alerting device but a microphone, or transmitter, a speaker, or receiver, and other components that have as a purpose filtering, amplification, and dialing. When the handset is taken off the hook the phone goes into an active state. The receiver, transmitter, and other components that involve the transmission of sound are automatically connected to the phone line. A dial tone is then heard and that signals that the system is ready for the caller to dial the number of the person they are trying to reach.
It is interesting that in recent times the phone has been adapted to handle other types of data transmission when it was originally designed for vocal communications only. These other types of communications involve dial up internet connections, Fax, and Telex. A development that has caused the telephone to become a necessity in daily life, whether we are at home or at our jobs.
Corded telephones by there very nature are somewhat restrictive to a caller's movements but as a trade off they offer certain advantages that some of the more mobile devices can not match to the same degree. There are no batteries to run down in the middle of an important conversation. Neighbors can not by accident or design monitor your calls. They are not as heavy and are not as expensive as a cordless phone.
