Medical Symptoms Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Signs and symptoms can make it quite challenging to breath. COPD is one of the more common lung problems and is mostly brought on by smoking. This article takes a close look at the medical symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and steps a person can consider to manage those signs and symptoms.
COPD Symptoms And Causes
Signs or symptoms have a tendency to grow and develop slowly and may involve:
- Challenging breathing (dyspnea) that worsens with activity
- Coughing with mucus production
- Repeated lung infections
- Fatigue
- Wheezing
- Cyanosis (slight bluish or grayish coloring of the skinwhich may be more notable in the fingers) may be detected in some sufferers
Most people with COPD have a combination of two lung disorders , chronic bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. Other long-standing lung ailments like chronic asthma, and chronic bronchiolitis may also be present.
Smoking is a significant cause of COPD. The more often one smokes, the much more possible it is that the individual will develop signs and symptoms of this lung disorder. Additional risk variables involve exposure to particular gases or fumes, exposure to copious quantities of second-hand smoke and pollution, or over-exposure to cooking gas with out suitable ventilation.
COPD Diagnosis And Treatment
Observation of the above mentioned signs or symptoms can be an essential aspect of a beginning diagnosis. If signs or symptoms are notices an analysis should be carried out by a healthcare provider. The evaluation may involve a physical examination and lung function checks such as spirometry (a simple test that measures lung capacity). In some instances it will be essential to perform blood tests (i.e. blood gas tests) to measure the amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bloodstream. Visualizing the lung area utilizing X-rays and CT scans can be valuable but may not share signs of COPD.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is regarded as a persistent and progressive disorder and there is presently no cure available. Therapy and treatment is targeted on alleviating the signs or symptoms and slowing progression.
A medical provider may prescribe a bronchodilator (inhaler) or other drugs to open up airways and improve respiration. Commonly used drugs include ipratropium (Atrovent), tiotropium (Spiriva), salmeterol (Serevent), or formoterol (Foradil). Inhaled steroids may be recommended to lower inflammation of the lungs. At home oxygen therapy may be necessary for some sufferers .
It's essential for the particular person to quit smoking and avoid air pollution. A particular person with COPD should steer clear of other persons who have acute contagious respiratory infections (i.e. Colds, Bronchitis, and many others.). Avoiding really chilled air may help prevent flare-ups.

Symptoms in the Pharmacy $71.95 Symptoms in the Pharmacy presents a guide to the management of common symptoms seen in the pharmacy, with advice from an author team that includes both pharmacists and GPs. With the continued emphasis on the pharmacist's role as a 'first port of call' in response to symptoms, the need for effective communication and interpersonal skills remains paramount. This book provides the pharmacist with the appropriate techniques for gathering information to meet the needs of patient safety in a way that is acceptable to the public. Case studies and comments from the pharmacist's and doctor's perspective are included throughout. This is now the fifth edition of Symptoms in the Pharmacy. The text has been fully revised to reflect the latest 'prescription only medicine' to 'pharmacy medicine' switches. Changes in medicine use, cautions and contraindications where recent evidence has shown new safety concerns are also covered. Similarly, where new evidence has shown treatments to be less effective and thus superseded, they have been removed. Reviewer: A reader from Bradford UK This book is an excellent guide for either trainee or newly qualified pharmacists. It covers most ailments which may be encountered on a daily basis in the community pharmacy and describes features of more serious underlying disease to aid diagnosis or referral. It is well presented and clearly laid out with separate chapters for each ailment. At the end of each chapter are example case studies giving in summary both the view of a pharmacist and medical doctor for each condition. My only criticism is that there are no illustrations or diagrams which I feel would have been helpful when describing clinical features of some conditions. Nonetheless there are clear descriptions of each ailment, highlighting symptoms, possible causes and most appropriate treatments. Importantly it gives clear guidelines on when to refer presenting ailments to a doctor. It is comparable in style to the title Minor Illness or Major Disease, however this title is illustrated with photographs of illness to aid recognition. A useful guide for all student pharmacists, preregistration pharmacists and possibly newly qualified pharmacists. |

Menopausal Symptoms by Bunde, Mali [Paperback] $134.33 The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a model of womens decisionmaking regarding menopausal symptoms. The publication of results from the Womens Health Initiative (WHI) and the rising popularity of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) make this an interesting time to examine womens increasingly complex decisionmaking process. Existing models of health behavior suggest factors that may be considered in womens decisions regarding management of menopausal symptoms. The current project used survey methodology to test the effectiveness of a proposed model of menopausal symptom decisionmaking in two groups of women: (a) women who recently had a hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy and (b) community women who experienced natural menopause. Symptom severity, common sense beliefs, and social influence were all found to play a significant role in womens decisionmaking process. These preliminary findings represent empirical and conceptual progress in the understanding of these decisions, and lay the groundwork for future research in the realm of menopausal decision making.
