Fun Memory Improvement Exercises for Adults
Who says doing memory improvement exercises have to feel like you're participating in a medical experiment? These days more and more individuals are taking care of not only their physical health but their mental health as well. The great news is that there are tons of exercises designed to improve a person's memory that are not only effective but fun to do as well.
Name That Tune!
Memorization doesn't always have to mean recalling complicated amounts of information or learning meaningless numbers. Have fun testing your memory by playing a list of your favorite old school songs and singing along to the lyrics to see how much of it you remember. Whether your music choices came out two years ago or twenty years ago, this type of memory exercise is ideal for adults in their 20s, 30s, 40s and older. Not only will you be able to effectively find out how good your memorization is, it gives you the perfect opportunity to jump up and dance, sing along and reminisce on where you were when each song came out. Do this activity with your closest friends for a real walk down memory lane.
Flash Cards with a Twist
Flash cards have been a popular type of study material for years but why not use them to your advantage as a memory improvement exercise? To make things more interesting, create your own flash cards but pick a topic that you have no prior knowledge about. Of course you'll want to choose a subject that isn't boring. Maybe you've always wanted to learn more about a certain country's culture, find out who holds the most out of the box world records or want to learn the biographies of some of your favorite historical figures. Regardless of the subject, gather as much information as you can and break it down into easy to memorize concepts on each flash card. Whenever you feel the need, break them out and see how much you're able to remember.
Mental Grocery List
Want to make your next trip to the grocery store memorable? Challenge yourself by doing memory improvement exercises that require you to memorize your grocery list instead of relying on a written list. Parents can even get their kids in on the fun. Write down your list of items and hand it to your children. When you get to the grocery store, see how many products you're able to remember and add them to the cart—remember, your kids should keep the list away from you during this time…no cheating! Before heading to the checkout stand, have your kids check your items against what you've written on the list. Grocery shopping will never be boring again!
Speed Dial the Old Fashioned Way
Remember the days when we all had the ability to memorize each and every one of our friend's and family's phone numbers? Don't fall prey to your cell phone and technology—instead, take it upon yourself to come up with a short list of about 10 phone numbers you use on a regular basis and instead of using your phone's built in address book, commit the number to memory and dial it in manually every time. Each time you successfully memorize a set of 10 numbers, add 10 more to memorize and so on.
Nice to Meet You
Even those with the best memories often have a hard time remembering the names of people they've just met. To be better about this, as well as incorporate a new form of memory improvement exercises, make things more entertaining by making an effort to not only remember the name of a person you've just met, but mentally list three or four things you notice about that person as well. This type of association is very helpful as reminders the next time you get stuck trying to recall a person's name. If necessary, write the info down using flash cards and test yourself from time to time—this method can prove to be especially useful to those in the business world that constantly find themselves being introduced to new people on a regular basis.
