Tablets are computers that are designed specifically so that they can last a long time on their battery. That means using computer parts that balance performance and power. You can't have both the highest performance pieces of equipment and have highly efficient parts. You must have one or the other in the computing world. The free HP Slate does a great job balancing performance and having a better than average battery life.
The free Slate houses an Intel Atom processor that is rated at 1.86 GHz. This is fast as far as tablets go. Most tablets, such as the iPad, run a Snapdragon processor that is rated only at 1.0 GHz. While you won't get twice as fast speeds as an iPad, the HP Slate free will definitely feel snappier than the iPad. The Slate also has 2 gigs of ram which is quadruple the amount of ram that many other tablets have.
One of the biggest issues with tablets nowadays is their lack of storage. Regular hard drives, such as the one found in your computer, are relatively old pieces of technology. A ceramic platter spins at high speeds and a magnetic spindle reads the 1s and 0s off of that disc. As you can imagine, these things break and break easily. They also draw quite a bit of power and are very fragile when it comes to sudden stops. The nature of a tablet is to live life on the go. Occasional drops will happen and with a regular hard drive you're going to have a massive loss of memory in no time.
The Slate uses what's known as a solid state drive, or SSD. SSDs are great pieces of hardware because they use less power than a hard drive and have not a single moving part in them. They are more energy efficient and are much less fragile. They also have much faster read and write times so your computer will run nice and fast. The only issue with the SSD is the fact that they cost so much more per gigabyte than a regular hard drive. The Slate is limited to only 64 gigs of a SSD and that's going to end up costing you quite a bit. However, with the card reader for HP Slate free these problems can be nullified. SD cards, which the Slate accepts, can be upwards of 128 gigs in size. They are relatively cheap too. With the built in SD card reader in the Slate you're going to be set when it comes to memory. Store all of your music, video and other things all with a convenient SD card. Or, if you prefer, you can hook up your cameras SD card (or video camera for that matter) and read the data found in there. You can easily hook up practically any device to the Slate thanks to the card reader that is built in.
The Slate is one of the top contenders in the current tablet computing race. Anyone who buys a tablet needs to consider the Slate.
